About Pistol Training
Meet Jon Luker
USCCA certified instructor. Attorney in private practice. US Army veteran and former paramedic.
Jon came to firearms through his military service, in training that mixed military familiarization with law enforcement handgun work. He did not carry afterward. What changed his mind was a pattern he noticed in his own life: he learned CPR only after watching a man die without it, and he learned a more aggressive style of unarmed self defense only after he was mugged. He decided he did not want to keep learning lessons that way.
He came back to handguns through the US Concealed Carry Association, took the CPL class, then went on for his instructor certification. He is USCCA certified for Concealed Carry Fundamentals and Home Defense Fundamentals.
Being a lawyer shapes how he teaches. A CPL class is not only about what happens when you decide to shoot, it is about how that decision gets reviewed afterward by law enforcement and by the courts, and that is the part he spends real time on. He has taught college level business and law courses, along with medical, winter survival and high adventure training, and he spends most of his working life connecting US military veterans to the resources they and their families need.
He is careful about what a class can promise. Eight hours will not make anyone an expert. It will give you the safety habits, the legal grounding and the range time that meet the Michigan training requirement, and a foundation you can keep building on.

Questions students ask
Is this class state approved?
Yes. Every class listed here meets the Michigan CPL training requirements, and your certificate is valid for your application at the county clerk.
Do I need any experience?
No. Beginners are welcome and many students are shooting for the first time. You will be coached at your own pace, and questions are welcome at any point in the day.
How long does the class take?
One day. You cover the classroom material and the live fire range session in the same session.
Do I need my own gun?
Not usually. Most ranges rent a pistol and sell ammunition for the range portion. Check the class listing for details, or call us at (248) 662-5744 before you book.
What should I bring?
A valid state ID, closed-toe shoes, a pen and a good attitude. Bring your own pistol and ammunition if you have them.
What happens after the class?
You take your certificate to your county clerk, fill out the application, get fingerprinted and pay the state fees. The clerk’s office handles it from there and your license arrives by mail.
